Course Description

This qualification is at AQF Level 5, described in the Australian Qualifications Framework as the following.

Graduates at this level will have specialised knowledge and skills for skilled/paraprofessional work and/or further learning.

Graduates at this level will have technical and theoretical knowledge in a specific area or a broad field of work and learning.

Graduates at this level will have a broad range of cognitive, technical and communication skills to select and apply methods and technologies to:

  •   analyse information to complete a range of activities

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who apply knowledge, practical skills and experience in leadership and management across a range of enterprise and industry contexts.

Individuals at this level display initiative and judgement in planning, organising, implementing and monitoring their own workload and the workload of others. They use communication skills to support individuals and teams to meet organisational or enterprise requirements.

They plan, design, apply and evaluate solutions to unpredictable problems, and identify, analyse and synthesise information from a variety of sources.

Domestic Students undertaking this course will typically be interested in experiencing the Australian Education System.

Tailored for post-secondary school vocational training, individuals enrolling in the BSB51918 Diploma of Leadership and Management will be looking to develop the skills required to provide leadership and guidance to others and take responsibility for the effective functioning and performance of the team and its work outcomes.

Students selecting this course will typically be interested in:

Entry Requirements

Although there are no barriers to entry based on age (other than post school students over 18), gender, social or educational background. Potential students will:

  • Students are required to bring their laptop or tablet to participate in this course.
  • Be technology savvy to undertake the practical application of the online learning and assessment.
  • Have foundation skills at a minimum of Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) level 3 listed

Where students cannot demonstrate the required English language skills the Training Manager will recommend students enrol in an appropriate English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) at their own cost to develop their foundations skills and English level to IELTS 5.5

Selection Criteria

Prior to enrolment in the Diploma of Leadership and Management applicants, must provide evidence showing:

  • Domestic students must be at least 18 years of age at the time of their course commencement at the college
  • Minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; or TOEFL iBT (internet-based) minimum score of 65 with no band less than 15; or Pearson (PTE) 42 (no communicative skills less than 36); or Any other equivalent assessment of English language proficiency

Results older than 2 years are not acceptable.

OR

·         Evidence that, within two years of their application date, they have successfully completed in Australia a foundation courses or a senior secondary certificate of education or a substantial part of a Certificate IV or higher level qualification, from the Australian Qualifications Framework.

OR

· Domestic students applying for a Diploma level course will need to provide evidence of satisfactory completion of Australian Year 11 (or equivalent) or certificate IV or higher *.

*Determination of equivalency can be made via the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/vcerecognition/equiquals/equiv-yr11.aspx  As per its Admission and Enrolment Policy and Procedure, MMC conducts pre-enrolment Client Needs Analysis to determine course suitability, existing skills and knowledge and an early detection of any learning needs. Pre-enrolment analysis includes LLN testing and identification of specific learning and/or support needs. A pre-enrolment interview may also be conducted.

RPL and credit transfer opportunities are provided at the time of enrolment, and an option for students to apply at time during their studies.

Students will be informed that study duration may be reduced if RPL or credit transfer is approved.

MMC’s LLN and student support policies support these processes.

IT Literacy Requirements

This qualification requires an intermediate/advanced understanding and use of computers and the internet, technology skills will include using word and excel or simular software to:

  • Prepare written and graphic reports
  • Develop professional development plan
  • Access the learning material and submit assessments on line.

To ensure students have the sufficient skills to participate in the course, Melbourne Metropolitan College will require students to undertake a basic Computer Literacy Test before enrolment will be accepted.

In the event students do not have, the technical skills to participate fully, students are offered the following options:

  • The Trainer will work with the Student to show them how to access the material; or Melbourne Metropolitan College will recommend a suitable course to improve these skills.
Duration

The duration of the program is 40 weeks broken down into 36 weeks of delivery, and 4 weeks of holidays.

36 weeks of training delivery (13 hours per week over 2 days) and structured tutorial sessions (7 hours per week) plus 12 hours per week of self-paced activities and completing the assessments.

Delivery Modes

The BSB51918 Certificate IV in Business involves classroom-based learning, trainer supported tutorials, self-paced activities and assessment. Students attend scheduled structured training for a minimum 20 hours per week.

Self Paced

Students dedicate 12 hours per week to home study where they complete research, work through student guides and read the relevant chapters of their textbook and finalise assessments.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning is available. Melbourne Metropolitan College offers students the opportunity to apply for RPL during the enrolment or after orientation.

Melbourne Metropolitan College has a streamlined RPL process to support the student to make a self-assessment of their skills, in preparation for an interview with an assessor. RPL may reduce the course duration.

Credit Transfer (CT)

Learners may apply for credit transfer. If the Learners has successfully completed unit/s that have identified equivalence in content and learning outcomes between matched qualifications. If upon successful application Learners will be granted, Credit Transfer of the unit/s and are not required to enrol or undertake the unit. This will appear on their Statement of Results or Statement of Attainment as a CT.

CT may reduce the course duration.
